Most low back pain of biomechanical origin results from the joints of the low back not functioning properly. Associated with that there may be muscle spasm in the muscles of the low back or buttocks. Sometimes pain may refer down the leg. Often this is referred to as “sciatica” but in fact true sciatica is not common and usually results from an injury to an intervertebral disc caused by heavy lifting in an incorrect manner. Generally true sciatica will result in pain in the leg which will go down as far as the foot. Pain arising from the low back joints generally stops at the knee or above. There are several causes of true sciatica, one of which is the “slipped disc”.
